The Importance of Trying New Things

Sailing the Med
We made some wonderful memories on our sailing boat, but the time has come to try new things

Five years ago my husband and I bought a sailing boat. We had never owned a boat before and did not come from boating families, so we had no idea whether we would like it or not, but we felt it was worth a try. Over the years we had some great times on the yacht with our kids – we got to see some beautiful scenery including lovely beaches that are difficult to access from land. We also crossed over to Sicily and spent long days lazing on Sicilian beaches and eating pizza and pasta. So it has been great and we are very grateful that we plucked up the courage to try it out.

The time has now come, however, to try different things. Five years into our yachting experience we have come to the conclusion that although we did enjoy it, we are landlubbers at heart, and that dreaming of becoming the next Delos crew are just that – dreams. We like being on terra firma 🙂

US road trip
We are going on a road trip in the US, starting in New York and going on to Washington and New England

So we have decided to sell our boat and embark on new adventures. We are planning some exciting trips in 2017 – we already booked a three week trip to the US (can’t wait to gorge on lobster, oysters and clams in New England!) and are also thinking of visiting Russia.

Yesterday we took the plunge and became  members of our local sports club. We plan to play squash regularly and learn how to play golf. Now that hubby and I are in our forties we are finding it increasingly easy to put on a kilo or two (or three!) so getting in more exercise is critical to stay in shape. We hope to live long and active lives so we need to invest some time and effort to make it happen. Squash is a great way to get aerobic exercise and get the heart pumping while golf is good for the arms and legs because you walk around for hours while pushing a golf cart. The health benefits are important of course, but our decision is also related to the fact that these are great activities for couples who want to spend more time together, while meeting new people and socializing. We are looking forward to our first squash session tomorrow morning and are planning to make it a regular Saturday thing 🙂

I have never played squash or golf, so I have no idea whether I will enjoy them. However the fact is that I will never know unless I try. Life can become somewhat monotonous and mundane if we let it, so trying new things is essential if we do not want to lead a humdrum existence. This year I will check out squash and golf. If I do not like them I will move on to something else – cycling? There are lots of exciting activities I would like to try my hand at!

2016 has been very exciting on the career front, with lots of change and business trips to places I had never been before (for example Bahrain and Saudi Arabia). 2017 promises to be just as busy, but I am determined to carve out enough time for myself, to spend with the people I love and taking care of myself.

I wish you all a healthy and happy 2017 🙂

  1. One of the most important “new thing” on the career level that I’ve “tried” in my life was to become self employed. I didn’t choose to. I had to, because I had no work permit and this was the next obvious legal thing to do. Luckily the people who recommended me this were right and I’ve learned sooo much through that. In fact it completely changed my life in a good way and actually lead to become financially independent in my early 30’s.
Many times we don’t try things because we don’t know them and assume that “it must be complicated” or “too difficult”. But so often, after we start learning about it, these things turn out to be a lot less difficult and actually doable.
Being curious, questining “difficult” things and trying them if they seem to be a good idea, especially in self employment is something that I recommend everybody!

    1. Welcome back Mr W 🙂 you are perfectly right – necessity is the mother of invention! I read once that entrepreneurship thrives in difficult economies. I guess it’s because we need to be pushed out of our comfort zone 😉

Here’s to a 2017 that is full of excitement, happiness and new things we enjoy 🙂 Happy New Year Mr & Mrs W 🙂 XXX
